JAKE BRACKEN is a bounty hunter. A great one. But while things are good in his professional life, his personal life is a train wreck. Eight years ago, Jake abandoned his girlfriend upon discovering she was pregnant. He's so embarrassed by what he's done that he hasn't contacted her or his son since. As a result, Jake channels his guilt and anger into his work.
Jake's pathetic, solitary existence is turned upside-down one hangover-riddled morning as he wakes up to find--short, pudgy RUPERT standing in his office. Rupert launches into a soliloquy, in which he explains that he is the devil's errand boy--and he has an offer that Jake just can't refuse. Every now and then, a soul escapes hell and returns to earth. The damned soul uses the exact moment of a death here on earth to possess and take over the dying body--using its new "shell" to carry out whatever evil sent him to hell in the first place. These escapes do not sit well with the Devil. After all, he has a reputation to protect. However, the devil has no power on earth--he needs an earthly agent to help him round up these souls up send them back. He wants Jake to become his personal bounty hunter.
Before Jake can respond, Rupert tosses him a green, misshapen stone. The moment it hits Jake's hand, he gets a glimpse into the future, which reveals the DEATH of his son. It's blurry and in clips, but completely horrifying. Rupert says he will gladly give him the info he needs--IF he comes to work for the Devil. So, a deal is struck... and Jake accepts the job offer.
As Jake carries out his assignment, he discovers that he is one of MANY that have made their own deals with the devil. Each with a different job description. He comes to realize that the devil is a supernatural Godfather to an earthbound mafia. He has his own "made men" to carry out his wishes in return for power, money, and information.
Along his journey, Jake will meet two "civilians" that will round out his soul-hunting team. The first is LEON, a homeless lunatic. The source of his delusions comes from his gift--he's able to detect the presence of evil. While necessary to the team, Leon is also a giant pain the ass. He has compulsion problems--he laughs at funerals, steals things. If he thinks a woman has a nice rear end, he’ll tell her so. Loudly. The second civilian is a woman named KATIE. She is beautiful, smart and powerful--she just doesn't know it yet. The proverbial caterpillar waiting to transform. Katie works in the cold case file room of the local police department and is able to provide valuable above-board intel.
Jake successfully concludes his first job assignment. In the process, he manages to save his son and reconnect with him and the boy's mother in a small way. Jake can't wait to quit his horrifying new job, and perhaps reclaim his life. Rupert explains, to Jake's chagrin, that once you are part of "the family", you don't ever leave. With this, he gives Jake his next assignment. He explains that if Jake wants his family to continue to enjoy their health, he'd better get to work.
